About “English Rose”
“English Rose” is a hidden song by The Jam from their album All Mod Cons.
On the original pressing of the vinyl, “English Rose” was not listed on the back cover track list nor were the lyrics printed as songwriter Paul Weller felt that the lyrics didn’t mean the same without the music to go with them. Subsequent pressings listed the title on the track list (see below).
About All Mod Cons
The Jam’s third album, All Mod Cons, released in 1978, marked a significant shift in the band’s sound. With their previous album, “This is the Modern World,” receiving mixed reviews and lackluster sales, the band was at a crossroads. “All Mod Cons” showcased a more mature and polished sound, with a heavier emphasis on mod and soul influences.
The album features some of the band’s most iconic tracks, such as “Down in the Tube Station at Midnight,” “A Bomb in Wardour Street,” and “All Mod Cons,” which directly addresses the band’s critics and doubters. The album also showcases Paul Weller’s songwriting prowess, particularly on tracks such as “English Rose” and “The Butterfly Collector.”
With All Mod Cons, The Jam cemented their place as one of the most important and influential bands of the punk and new wave era, and the album remains a classic to this day.
