About Shut ‘Em Down
Shut ‘Em Down is the third studio album by American hip-hop group Onyx, released in 1998. Building on the hardcore rap sound they were known for, Onyx delivers an intense and aggressive collection of tracks on this album. It features guest appearances from Onyx’s affiliate X1, DMX, 50 Cent, Still Livin from Gang Green, All City, Mr. Cheeks, Wu-Tang Clan, N.O.R.E., Big Pun and others. Shut ‘Em Down is the last album released by Onyx on the Def Jam label; Both Onyx and JMJ Records were removed from Def Jam on “Black Thursday” – January 21, 1999 – because the PolyGram label (who purchased 50% of Sony’s Def Jam in 1994) was sold to Seagram on December 10, 1998.
Shut ‘Em Down features the signature gritty and confrontational style of Onyx, with hard-hitting beats, aggressive lyrics, and powerful vocal deliveries. The album tackles various themes such as social issues, street life, and personal struggles, all delivered with raw energy and a no-nonsense attitude.
The album includes notable tracks like the title track “Shut ‘Em Down,” which serves as a fierce anthem with its booming production and impactful verses. Other standout songs include “React,” featuring hip-hop legend Busta Rhymes, and “Broke Willies,” which delves into the hardships of urban life.
Shut ‘Em Down showcases Onyx’s ability to captivate listeners with their energetic performances and unfiltered lyrics. It remains a notable release in the group’s discography, solidifying their reputation as one of the leading forces in hardcore rap during the late 1990s.
