Beck: Mutations

About “Diamond Bollocks”

“Diamond Bollocks” is a hidden song by Beck from his album Mutations.

Originally left off Mutations because musically it didn’t jive with the rest of the songs, Beck dropped in “Diamond Bollocks” as a hidden track to serve as a sort of gateway to his next album, which turned out to be Midnite Vultures. The Brazilian version lists “Diamond Bollocks” as track 11, and “Runners Dial Aero” as track 13 with no hidden tracks.

About Mutations

Beck’s sixth album, Mutations, is a departure from the sound of his previous album Odelay. Released in 1998, Mutations has a more subdued and melancholic tone, featuring primarily acoustic instruments and a stripped-down production style. The album was recorded with a variety of musicians, including members of the band Smokey Hormel and Joey Waronker, and was produced by Nigel Godrich.

Mutations showcases Beck’s ability to shift genres and experiment with different sounds, while still maintaining his distinctive voice and songwriting style. The album draws from a range of influences, including folk, country, and psychedelic rock, and features lyrics that explore themes of heartbreak, loss, and disillusionment.

The album’s opening track, “Cold Brains,” sets the tone for the rest of the record, with its gentle acoustic guitar and mournful vocals. Other standout tracks include “Nobody’s Fault But My Own,” a haunting ballad with a bluesy feel, and “Tropicalia,” which features a catchy melody and upbeat instrumentation.

Despite being a departure from his previous work, Mutations was a critical and commercial success, earning Beck a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. The album is considered a classic in Beck’s discography and a testament to his versatility and experimentation as an artist.
